The AAR

The Australasian Alpaca Register (AAR) is a superior way of registering your alpacas.

• World First: record genetically-based coat patterns like Appaloosa, True Black, Bay, Tuxedo, and more
• World First: record the colours of eyes, eyelashes, toenails, nose and footpads
• World First: record Suri Backcross 1, 2, 3, 4 and First Filial Generation
• World First: record all DNA markers individually, and search the register for same

What You Need To Know
The AAR records alpaca traits along sound scientific lines and has the added advantage of having two levels of Register. Initially all alpacas will be registered on the Unverified Section of the register. Any alpaca that has two full generations of DNA testing will progress to the Verified Register.

The first tier will record alpacas who are either not DNA tested or alpacas with less than two whole generations of DNA tested animals in their heritage. Those animals who have been DNA tested will be noted so prospective buyers can see that they are on their way to the Verified Register.

The second tier will be the Verified Register. This tier will record alpacas with full DNA testing and with verified parentage.

The AAR will be supported by a state of the art DNA testing system. The DNA markers are the most modern and complete of any DNA testing available in the world today.

All DNA tests conform to world standards that have been developed and agreed by international laboratories in May 2006. The DNA markers will be acceptable in the USA, Germany and Britain. Additionally the AAR tests more markers than are currently used in Australia (to our knowledge) and are labelled to international standards.

So, the markers used are compatible with most other registers internationally. The DNA information will be stored on your behalf, and the information stored on the AAR belongs to you, the members.

Why the AAR Exists
One of the important objectives of the Australasian Alpaca Breeders Association (AABA) is the development of the Australasian Alpaca Register (AAR).

The AAR is an innovative database and alpaca register.

Breeders need to have accurate and usable information that conforms to scientific values. This will enhance the AABA Alpaca Breeders’ breeding decisions. The ability to DNA test your whole herd has potentially large marketing advantages for participants.

What if My Alpacas are Registered Elsewhere?
As a foundation register any alpaca is eligible to be registered on the AAR. Animals who are not currently tagged and with no parentage information will need to be DNA tested.
